Feeding the Right Fire: Ways to Avoid Burnout
Presenter: Kendra Kubala, PsyD. PA License #PS018179

By nature, psychologists tend to be passionate people who are energized by assisting others in becoming their best and healthiest version of themselves. This energy typically bubbles over from professional to personal lives as others seek out these seemingly omnipotent, selfless advice-givers and support-providers. Most of the time, this energy is enough to keep the psychologist going but there are moments, days, weeks, months, and years, in which the psychologist (/partner/parent/coach/sibling/daughter/son/ teacher/supervisor, etc.) is stretched too thin and this momentum comes to a halt. Symptoms of burnout among psychologists may be ambiguous and may present in a variety of environments, sometimes clouding the ability to easily identify this experience. This presentation aims to assist psychologists in becoming more familiar with key terms and definitions, increasing the ability to identify symptoms and patterns consistent with burnout, increase  support for psychologists, and rekindle the energy that propelled the participants into the field of psychology at the beginning of their careers. Participants will be encouraged to provide feedback and relevant personal experiences while actively participating in meaningful conversations and activities centered on self-care.

Learning Objectives
  • Participants will leave the presentation armed with three new ways to engage in self-care
  • Participants will identify covert ways in which their wellness may be challenged by their professional activity, along with ways to combat these challenges before the person becomes overtly symptomatic
  • Participants will identify supports among their colleagues and create new connections, whom they may contact for support
  • Participants will further their knowledge of terms and definitions related to self-care and symptoms of burnout specific to the field of mental health
  • Participants will learn about available measures to assess their level of work-related stress
  • Participants will identify ways to reconnect with their professional identity, as well as how this has the potential to impact themselves, their patients, colleagues, and loved ones
