Prevention and Treatment of Post-Concussion Syndrome:
 A Biopsychosocial Approach
Presented by:
Ashley Gorman, Ph.D. and Lisa Hahn, Ph.D.

Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS) has increased in prevalence as the medical field and general public have become more aware of and concerned about concussion, particularly in young athletes. PCS includes a non-specific set of symptoms that can be attributed to a variety of injury-related, psychological, and situational factors. The goal of this talk to describe the multi-factorial nature of the etiology and treatment of post-concussion symptoms and how mental health professionals can assist in managing these symptoms in children, adolescents, and adults.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand the typical recovery pattern of post-concussion symptoms based on empirical research studies in both sports-related and non-sports related concussion.
  2. Review research on rest after concussion and gain understanding into how much rest is necessary after a concussion.
  3. Learn how psychological interventions can assist in the treatment and prevention of post-concussion symptoms.
