Gender in the Contemporary Clinical Situation
Presenter: Sam Semper, Ph.D.
In this seminar participants will engage with contemporary clinical literature related to gender identity
formation and gender expression in order to become familiar with current terms and debates in this
area. Participants will gain practical tools to work with issues related to gender including clinical work
with individuals who identify as gender non-conforming, gender-queer/ gender-fluid, and/or transgender.
The following questions frame the seminar: How do we understand gender identification(s) and
gender expression in developmental terms without falling into the trap of biological essentialism or
reifying outdated notions of a strict gender binary? How do we work with issues related to gender in
ways that take into account the power of unconscious fantasies, family dynamics, as well as the effect
of socio-cultural meanings of gender including the effects of heteronormativity? In the case of those
who identify as gender-queer or trans specifically, how do we work in ways that recognize gendered
fantasy, the dynamic unconscious, and affirm trans or gender-queer experience? Case material will be
Sam Semper, Ph.D., holds a PhD in Women’s and Gender Studies from the University of British Columbia. She
is a Supervisor and Instructor in the Child & Adolescent Psychotherapy Program at the Institute for Psychoanalytic
Training and Research (IPTAR). Sam is an Advanced Candidate in IPTAR’s Adult Psychoanalytic Program.
Learning Objectives: This workshop is designed to help you:
• List current terms related to gender identity and gender expression.
• Describe specific issues related to working with gender non-conforming/ non-binary individuals including common
transference-counter-transference issues.
• Describe gender transitioning (social/ medical).
