About Psychologists

Psychologists help people by using a variety of orientations and techniques in therapy taking into consideration each person's unique history, issues, and goals to achieve a successful outcome.  In New Jersey, in order to identify as a psychologist, one must have a doctoral degree (PhD, PsyD, or EdD) earned from a regionally accredited program, pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology and the Jurisprudence Exam, and possess a valid NJ license issued by the Board of Psychological Examiners. School psychologists only require a Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited school. A doctoral degree the highest levels of education for mental health care professionals. In order to obtain experience working with patients, New Jersey requires at least 2 years (3,500 hours) of supervised practice before obtaining a license.
