Our Mission

"The mission of the New Jersey Psychological Association is the advancement of psychology as a science, as a profession, and as a means of promoting health and human welfare in an atmosphere that supports the diversity of its members and the society at large."

About Psychologists

Psychologists help people by using a variety of orientations and techniques and take into consideration each person's history, issues, and goals to achieve a successful outcome.  New Jersey requires degrees to come from programs accredited by a regional accrediting organization recognized by the US Department of Education, such as the American Psychological Association.  Only school psychologists require a Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited school. Other than this exception, psychologists earn a doctoral degree (either a PhD, PsyD, or EdD) that is one of the highest levels of education for health care professionals. In order to obtain experience working with patients, New Jersey requires at least 2 years (3,500 hours) of supervised practice before obtaining a license.  After earning their degree and acquiring the necessary supervised hours, one must pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology in order to become licensed.  A mental health provider cannot refer to themselves as a psychologist unless all these conditions have been met.

For Professionals

"NJPA has been my professional home for over thirty years. It is a wonderful organization that allows psychologists to come together for support, training, advocacy, and meaningful relationships."

~  Barry Helfmann, PsyD
NJPA Director of Professional Affairs
