Program Description: Ethical decision-making can be challenging. Oftentimes two competing ethical principles can be applied to a case, and the psychologist needs to determine which is the more effective principle for the situation. Positive ethics encourages psychologists to draw not only on the APA ethics code, as well as state laws and regulations, but to also consider the relationship between those rules and how to reach the best outcomes in any given situation. This can be accomplished by focusing on the client’s strengths and looking to reach the highest aspirational level rather than just avoiding negative repercussions. The role of cultural factors and the psychologist’s own values and beliefs will also be considered.

Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
1. Describe the foundations of positive ethics
2. Identify 2 ways to help prevent ethical problems and dilemmas
3. Explain how to apply these concepts to explore specific ethical dilemmas
4. Identify three of their own values and beliefs may influence ethical decision-making
5. Analyze and list two cultural factors that may inform ethical decision-making
